Paper Sculptures - Pre-K 2
After noticing an accumulating pile of paper fans and telescopes the teachers realized that the interest in the transformation of paper was real and a study of the language of paper was indicated & pertinent. Using paper in many colors, sizes, weights and textures, the children were introduced to the basic techniques of bending, folding, and curling. More advanced paper-making techniques were explored; making pleats, springs & quilling. Cutting techniques including fringing, spiraling & patterning such as; zig-zaging & curving were investigated.
As children became more familiar with the variety of paper and its potential, they began creating three-dimensional paper sculptures by intertwining pieces of paper, utilizing the many techniques they learned through active hands-on discovery. Collaboratively working with only black and white papers deepened the visual contrast and highlighted the unique qualities of the properties of the paper for the children.
