Geraldine’s Montana Sky
I am participating in Creative Cups in honor of my mother, Maria, who recently celebrated her first year of remission as a breast cancer SURVIVOR.
I believe it is also of great importance to keep alive the loving memory of my mother-in-law, Geraldine, and thus I am dedicating my creation to her. Although I did not have the opportunity to meet Geraldine, I embrace and treasure my husband Eric’s tender memories of his mother. Geraldine had lived with breast cancer for most of my husband’s childhood. Eric is now thirty-two years old. He recalls his mom having never complained about or questioned her life-threatening diagnosis. And yet with cancer, Geraldine continued to love, nurture and constantly support her three sons—Sean, Eric and Matthew. Geraldine had a great appreciation for American Indian art, culture and jewelry. She found beauty in the scenic landscapes of Vermont and of the west, particularly Montana. Not long before she passed away, Geraldine vanquished a much-anticipated trip to Montana. Eric and I made our trip to Montana this past August to celebrate his mother’s life. We had the chance to witness the breathtaking beauty of the mountains and “big sky” that his mother had cherished. (Eric also lost his wedding band there while horseback riding.)
My Creative Cup: my design embraces Montana’s beauty, nature and native culture. The raven flying over the mountains represents Geraldine’s son Eric. Eric’s American Indian astrology symbol is the Raven (Libra). I wanted to include him in this design and somehow reunite Eric with his mom.
