Strength In Numbers
I was diagnosed with breast cancer in September of 2000 at 32 years old. I had three small children at the time and underwent mastectomy, chemo and radiation. I started to struggle emotionally and contacted the Adelphi Breast Cancer Hotline. I can still remember the kind woman on the phone who answered my questions and encouraged me to join one of the breast cancer support groups that Adelphi offered. Joining that support group was one of the best things I could have done. Walking into that room and seeing other women with no hair, recovering from surgeries, etc. made me feel instantly that I was not alone. Breast cancer can feel like a lonely disease but when you reach out and connect with others you find strength. Each time we met I was able to voice my fears, sadness and hopes without worrying that I would burden a family member. I found honesty and comfort in that group.
Eventually three other women and I from the initial group continued to meet monthly outside of Adelphi and have remained friends for the past fourteen years. I have done breast cancer awareness projects and I have a support group called The Hope Card. When I look at all the strong, supportive cancer survivors that I have connected with through these years who have been there for me, I am overwhelmed with gratitude. This bra is a tribute to their shining hearts as seen through their smiling faces. I love each and every one.
