Lightness of Being
The bra I’ve created is gilded with golden fabric rope that I purchased this summer from a woman in her garage as she sold/narrated the contents of her 30-year sewing box. The gold for me illuminates and honors the dried hibiscus flowers that fell in the hot July sun. They symbolize the completion of a project in which I floated cement in the yard for a small pool for our puppy to build strength in his leg after it was severely broken… these flowers symbolize the gift of purity and life. The “cups” envelope, literally and figuratively, my favorite Buddhist mudra, “Amitabha Buddha, the Buddha of light who embodies the energy of compassion that flows through the universe.” The palm up and open is a symbol of life and openness and receptiveness.
The bra has a contemplative feel to it because in creating it, I was deeply moved as I explored some of the various life forces that aren’t commonly discussed. Through my art I find a way, or multiple ways to look within. There is a science to all art, yet one needs to experience, see and feel it for oneself. It is something I have come to know about myself as I embark on any artistic challenge.
I applaud Creative Cups. This is my second year participating. Attending the gallery/auction is a breathtaking experience filled with artisans and souls of all kinds. Thank you, Adelphi, my alma mater (Latin alma “nourishing/kind”).
