Mind, Body & Soul:
The Metamorphosis of Our Lives

Earlier this year, a dear friend was diagnosed with breast cancer. She endured surgeries, chemotherapy, endless doctors’ appointments, blinding exhaustion and nausea. As we hoped and prayed for her recovery, we saw the stages of metamorphosis she went through. The butterfly symbolizes a rapid transformation or rebirth because of the process it goes through to become, in its final stage, a beauty. Butterflies are also symbolic of faith because its many transformations act as transitions in people’s lives.

As my friend went through each stage of her ordeal, each change brought her different feelings. She finished chemo this week and got an all-clear. This bra was decorated in her honor. It depicts her travels through all of her stages, and the light she is finally seeing at the end of this shadowy tunnel. Most of the beads used in this bra are handmade by me with her in mind. Many of the others are vintage. My sculpted, hand painted centerpiece is a two sectioned, one-of-a-kind butterfly head and body. It depicts the fact that each one of us is unique.
